Twice II: Of Seeing
WHAT
This is the second joint exhibition of the artists since 1995, featuring recent oil paintings from Yeung, and charcoal work and oil paintings done by Sze. Yeung’s large-scale figurative paintings are brightly-coloured with vivid contrasts, and are reminiscent of collages. These works connect different spaces, characters, and narratives all at once. Sze’s works are always on a horizontal scroll format, with muted colour tones and uncertainty of setting and subject. With their two largely different styles, the artists connect their works by the shared experience of living in Hong Kong, as they show immense warmth and care for ‘home’ with a sharp social awareness.
WHY
The highly-anticipated exhibition shows how the artists carry a deep, unrushed view on the act of viewing a painting. This view is shown through their process of making the painting, displaying the painting, and interacting with the painting. The process is an intimate dialogue between the respective painting and artist. The process also extends to the viewer, as the works unveil details and nuances that become integral to the viewing and appreciation of the painting.
