Anuses, earwax, pubic hair.
Local emerging artist, Wong Ping, is known for tongue-in-cheek works that combine the crass and the colourful to mount a discourse around repressed sexuality, personal sentiments & political limitations. His recent installations, sculptures, and films at the gallery's Wanchai location are sizeable artworks that thematically and formally correspond to one another, exploring the aesthetic meaning(-lessness) of bulls***.
Need we say more? The show expands Wong’s curious body of art that revolves around circular narratives and motifs. As the sole voice-over narrator for many of his videos and animations, the thought-provoking works are extensions of the artist’s fantastical animation world.
The exhibition opened during #hkartweek last month, and will run until 4 May.

Taking place at GalaxyArt in Macau, 'Genesis' celebrates new beginnings and shines the spotlight on 3 young Macanese artists: Ng Man Wai, Cheung Hoi I & Sou Leng Fong. Their respective artworks 'Doppelgänger: The Apple' (Pix 1-3), 'Pleased as Fruit Punch' (Pix 4-6) & 'Blooming' (Pix 7-9) are testament to how art in the form of large-scale immersive installations (accompanied by smaller works) can open our eyes to the joys & possibilities of life in its many forms. 'Andy Warhol’s Long Shadow' is organised for the gallery's Hong Kong location by Jessica Beck, formerly of the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. Opened during #hkartweek , the exhibition considers Warhol’s ongoing cultural impact by juxtaposing key paintings, photographs, and films by the artist with works by some of his contemporaries and successors - Derrick Adams, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Urs Fischer, Nan Goldin, Douglas Gordon, Alex Israel, Takashi Murakami, Richard Prince, Nathaniel Mary Quinn, Sterling Ruby, and Zeng Fanzhi. More art! There's more to see at the Convention Centre after #hkartweek in case you haven't had your fill yet from the fairs last week! The Sotheby's preview and auctions started today, presenting the best across art & luxury.
While ‘The Now’ evening auction on 5 April offers exciting, cutting-edge works (think Jadé Fadojutimi, Nicolas Party & Daniel Richter), the works showcased in the ‘Modern & Contemporary Evening Auction’ traverse the major artistic movements of the late 19th and 20th centuries: leading the sale is a phenomenal painting by Yoshitomo Nara, a glorious abstract painting by Zao Wou-Ki, and works by Monet and Renoir - to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Impressionism.

And that's a wrap to #hkartweek as Art Basel concluded yesterday and Art Central closes today. With both fairs back to their original pre-COVID scale (and Art Central at its original Central Harbourfront venue), the galleries were back in full force with programmes that reflected the interest of the Asian market. It was certainly a busy week as the city came alive with special pop-ups, events, talks and parties. Many of the gallery exhibitions are ongoing, so stay tuned!

If you're looking to see art outside the fairs for #hkartweek , come see 'Richter / Scully' at the Asia Society in Admiralty as well as at Ben Brown Fine Arts in Wong Chuk Hang. Curated by Joachim Pissarro, the two showcases pay tribute to Sean Scully and Gerhard Richter, bringing together a selection of the Irish & German artists' finest paintings and works on paper. It explores their unique approaches to painting and abstraction, revealing the physical and metaphysical aspects of their works. While Scully’s contribution includes a range of stunning paintings selected from his studio, Richter’s works encompass abstract & photo paintings, overpainted photographs, and works on paper. You're invited to literally crawl under the giant scarlet skirt to be become part of the performance - it is #hkartweek after all! The colour red is significant, representing both love & power, as well as sacrifice, sin, and redemption.
