Sculptor Wang Keping
WHO
Wang Keping
WHAT
The solo exhibition features a selection of the France-based Chinese sculptor’s (b.1949) most significant wood works, celebrating his over 45 years of art-making. He skilfully displays forms within forms, devising subtle slashes to evoke a certain emotion, a humorous gesture or a provocative intention. The exhibition coincides with the 60th anniversary of France and China’s cultural collaboration, adding to its significance in the global art scene.
WHY
The artist finds the essence or vitality of his creations residing within the very wood he works with. While his primary themes revolve around Woman, Man, Couple, Mother and Child, Birds and what he terms Ex-Voto to describe his abstract works, he grows more adept in capturing the material’s essence and exploring its offerings with each passing year. A true master who was a pivotal figure in China’s first contemporary art movement, The Stars Group, his exhibition is not to be missed.
