Ruth Asawa: Doing is Living
WHAT
The exhibition is a presentation of sculptures and works on paper by the late renowned American artist (1926–2013) – the first solo show in Greater China. Known primarily for her abstract looped-wire sculptures inspired by natural and organic forms, she has also created an extensive body of works on paper, including abstract and figurative drawings and prints influenced by nature. The exhibition provides an overview of the artist’s wide-ranging practice, focusing in particular on her affinity for the natural world, which in turn provided a constant source of inspiration in her art.
WHY
Relentlessly experimental across a range of mediums, the artist is known for her works built on simple, repeated gestures that accumulate into complex compositions. Moving effortlessly between abstract and figurative registers across two and three dimensions, she has created a vast and varied oeuvre that integrates artistic practice with family life.
