Susumu Kamijo
WHAT
The NY-based Japanese artist (b.1975) is known for his playful, abstract paintings of poodles and other sentient forms. His current exhibition of still-life possesses a ‘narrative style’, mimicking the minimalism of a poem and the surprise of a short story. He mingles drawing and painting techniques, creating an assemblage of symbols and signs that surprises, provokes, and transforms the viewing experience.
WHY
In his latest exhibition, the artist shifts gears into a more intimate space, where florals and creatures coalesce in arrangements that hover between fantasy and familiarity. His modern and non-conventional still life burst with texture and composition, exuding a strange vitality.
