Robert Indiana
WHAT
Famed artist Robert Indiana (1928-2018) is celebrated for his unique contributions to the Pop art movement, where he embraced the power of language, colour and form, while harnessing the American identity and his own personal history. During his career, he produced one of the most iconic bodies of work of the 20th and 21st centuries. Organised in collaboration with Morgan Art Foundation, the exhibition offers a comprehensive look at the artist’s distinctive imagery, featuring a curated selection of LOVE and ART sculptures as well as a rare group of paintings.
WHY
Morgan Art Foundation worked with Robert Indiana from 1995 onward as the artist’s exclusive partner for the authorised production, conservation, sale, and promotion of his sculpture series. Besides the featured selection of iconice and well-loved LOVE and ART sculptures, a rare group of paintings from Indiana’s ‘Ginkgo Ài’ series (2006) is also presented, on loan from the Star of Hope Foundation. The series incorporates the double/or mirrored ginkgo leaf image Indiana first explored in 1957. As a motif, the gingko leaf was a metaphor for the artist’s environs in New York City, reflecting his deep fascination with the East.
