JANINE ANTONI: In my holding
WHAT
The Bahamian artist is renowned for her groundbreaking performance works, which utilise her body as a conduit, tool, and anchor for conveying profound meaning. Through her early artistic methods, involving the transformation of materials such as chocolate and soap through daily rituals (bathing, eating, sleeping), she draws attention to the significance of the creative process itself. Each artwork communicates a palpable physicality, intended to directly engage the viewer’s body and senses. This exhibition serves as a continuation of her exploration of the expressive capacity of the body, and the notion of living from an embodied perspective.
WHY
One of the highlighted series, ‘From the Vow Made’ (2015), showcases ghostly sculptures that intricately merge the interior and exterior of the body in seemingly impossible connections. The artist meticulously choreographs each gesture and thoughtfully selects symbols, rekindling personal memories in the process. Each sculpture possesses its own visceral physical presence, acting as a catalyst for the viewer to establish a profound connection with their own body and sensory experiences.
