Before and After

September 1, 2022 - October 28, 2022

WHAT
Based in Hong Kong, the artist spent a majority of the early part of her career studying and working in Hong Kong, first as an electronic product design consultant, then as an artist specialising in Chinese ink painting, under the tutelage of ink painting master, Hung Hoi. The present exhibition showcases works that explore and outline the beauty of Hong Kong’s landscapes, which link back to Ko’s years at HKU, where she studied landscape and figure painting. A famous quote from Tao Te Ching (Ch.16) encapsulates the spirit of the exhibition: ‘Empty your mind of all thoughts, let your heart be at peace. Watch the turmoil of beings, but contemplate their return.’

WHY
This exhibition is an expansion on Ko’s studies of Hong Kong landscapes, but also showcases the almost-spiritual journey that highlights her breakthroughs of interlacing light and shadow. Inspired not only by nature’s beauty but also by profound introspection, there are also inclusions of paintings that document special moments in her life, giving more context and depth to the exhibition. The show is a timeless one that visualises and sustains the memories and hopes of the artist. It also ties in with Collect by 3812’s ‘The Light Room’ at Bespoke, an immersive experience featuring never-before-seen ink sketching by Ko juxtaposed with lighting pieces by renowned mid-century designers.
