Acts & Paintings
WHAT
The exhibition explores the intersection of art and environment, seen through the eyes of the Spanish-born Belgium-based artist (b.1968). Taking on the alter-ego of Straatman (‘man of the street’) and venturing into different environments – both natural and urban – he creates paintings that absorb and reflect the atmosphere of these environments. For this presentation, he explored both the serene natural surroundings and the bustling city core of Hong Kong, resulting in two distinct bodies of work that reflect contrasting aspects, and encapsulate the city’s different energies.
WHY
The exhibition promises to be a thought-provoking and visually-striking experience that pushes the boundaries of painting. Viewers get to engage with Vergara’s innovative artistic practice, which incorporates performance art, and observe how he uncovers the invisible through creative acts, where his active approach challenges traditional notions of painting as a static art form. It provides an intriguing exploration of Hong Kong, capturing its dual nature as a serene natural haven and a bustling metropolis.
