31 Women Artists
WHAT
Presenting the works of 31 different artists, the show pays homage to the 1943 exhibition titled the ‘31 Women Exhibition’, which was organised by the late American art collector, dealer, and socialite, Peggy Guggenheim (1898-1979). Guggenheim’s exhibition was one of the first in history to showcase the works of solely women, and this initiative helped uplift their position in the art world. Curator Caroline Ha Thuc takes inspiration from this iconic event by presenting the multi-media works of 31 women from Hong Kong and beyond, with diverse practices and from multiple generations.
WHY
We have come a long way since Peggy Guggenheim’s landmark exhibition, which was a strong move of feminism and made a powerful statement back in the early 1940s. Since then, much progress has been made and women artists are now as equally recognised and acknowledged as their male counterparts. ‘31 Women Artists’ not only allows viewers to see a variety of different female artists from different backgrounds and times; it also reminds viewers of how far we have come since the trailblazing efforts of the late Peggy Guggenheim.
