Learning What Can’t Be Taught

December 17, 2020 - June 26, 2021

WHAT WE KNOW

This exhibition looks into the changes in art education in China, from the 1950s to 2000s, by focusing on the stories of 6 Chinese artists who were teachers and students at the former Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts. Each of these narratives explores the process Chinese artists across generations go through – both inside and outside the classroom – to explain in turn how their artistic practices influence the way art is taught. Spread around the library, rarely seen art, archival materials and personal video interviews with Chinese artists are presented.

WHY WE LOVE IT

As part of Asia Art Archive’s 20th anniversary celebration, this anecdotal show provides comprehensive narratives about art history in China through the eyes of three generations of Chinese artists. Presented in the AAA library, it gives us a good background by tracing the relationship between artists’ educational backgrounds and their lineages of artistic attitudes.
