Time Scape

September 2, 2023 - November 4, 2023

WHAT
The respected Japanese artist (b.1946) holds a place as a pioneer of video art in Japan, having lived his young life amid the social changes from the postwar reconstruction period of Japan to its rapid economic growth. He continues to express the ‘time scape’ of that era in his photographs and videos. His unique artistic style incorporates elements of everyday life and expresses the lived times with humour and rich sensitivity. The exhibition showcases the Japanese artist’s extensive 60-year artistic career, featuring 15 works, including vintage landscape photographs, portraits, and video works from the 1970s and 1980s. It offers a comprehensive exploration of Imai’s artistic journey.

WHY
Imai’s artistic legacy extends beyond his monumental white monochrome works, as he made history by becoming one of the youngest members of the Gutai Art Association when he joined at the age of 19 in 1965. From the very beginning of his artistic career, Imai boldly challenged the established conventions of the art world, and he continues to do so now even as he approaches 80. This is a unique opportunity for audiences to learn more about one of the pioneers of the Gutai art movement.
