WHAT IS IT LIKE TO BE A (VIRTUAL) BAT?

September 2, 2023 - November 4, 2023

WHAT
The Hong Kong-based artist duo – formed by artist, Royce Ng, and anthropologist, Daisy Bisenieks – utilises digital media, performance, and installation to explore speculative scenarios and immersive sensory encounters. Inspired by Thomas Nagel’s essay on the subjective experience of other creatures, their latest exhibition delves into the research and sensory environments of insectivorous bats in Hong Kong. The presentation explores how consciousness is defined, and how new technologies can simulate or even replicate those experiences.

An appointments to see the exhibition can be made here.

WHY
By delving into the intriguing realms of interspecies empathy, consciousness, and the transformative possibilities offered by new technologies, the exhibition revolves around the concept of ‘decentering human experience’. Through immersive video installations, a virtual reality journey, and visually striking tile works, the exhibition takes viewers on a multisensory exploration of these profound themes, inviting them to question their understanding of consciousness and challenging the boundaries between human and animal experiences – a unique perspective on the interconnectedness of all beings!
