WHAT WE KNOW

A Chinese artist and photographer best known for his landscape work, Zhang is an expert at capturing moments of juxtaposition between China’s modernity and the past, highlighting cultural, economic and industrial changes. In this most well-known photography series, he brings China’s modern national identity to print.

WHY WE LOVE IT

Zhang spent the majority of his time exploring the most obscure places across Mainland China, bringing its hidden gems to us in the form of serene images that give us a sense of peace. However, he also managed to capture bizarre and obsolete subjects that he came across, prompting us to contemplate the effects of industrialisation on our culture and religion, as well as landscape. In the making of the Yellow River series, Zhang embarked on a 4-year journey with a fold-up bicycle along the river to capture sights never seen before.
