Xu Qu: Advent
WHAT
The Chinese artist’s (b. 1978, China) first solo exhibition at the museum showcases his new large-scale installations. Also featured are multiple series of recent large-scale paintings. The highlighted installation – sharing the title of the exhibition – creates a scene of an extra-terrestrial descending onto a huge spacecraft. The artist used recycled components from eight discarded ATMs to create this installation. He disassembled and flattened the machines to arrange them on a platform, where audiences interaction and engagement is encouraged.
WHY
A commentary on today’s society and how technology has taken over, the artist shows that people in general understand the universe through screens and are blocked in by digital images and AI manufacturing. The installation of discarded ATMs evokes emotions of abandonment and separation, due to the fact that these once-perfect industrial products are now forsaken.
