Trunk Road and Branch Roads
WHAT
The German artist (1952-2013) was one of the most significant German artists of the post-war generation. As a prolific painter, sculptor, graphic designer and photographer, he was renowned for his experimental and radical oeuvres that deeply engage with the modernist tradition. The current museum presentation brings together around 100 paintings made throughout the artist’s career, focusing entirely on Förg’s painting practice and combining hallmark series, such as his Spot Paintings, Grid Paintings and Grey Paintings. Additionally, rarely shown works will be on view, including a group of paintings using air varnish from 1993, surveying the breadth of Förg’s expression.
WHY
As the artist’s first major solo museum exhibition in Asia, the exhibition showcases how he used the language of abstraction in the painting practice. The artist used modern art and architecture tropes in his constant transformations of colour, form, and composition. He imitated and reacted against picture-making gestures and principles, pushing them to their limits and using them in new ways. A must-see of all fans of modern art.
