Xi Jiu: Forging the Swords
WHO
Xi Jiu
WHAT
The Beijing-based artist creates a visual interpretation of the iconic tale, ‘Forging the Swords’ by Lu Xun. The exhibition presents a scene-by-scene critique of sacrifice and submission to violence. The collection of miniature artworks invite closer inspection, with traditional fine lines and colour blocks resembling Chinese gongbi paintings. However, the artist lends a softer, more feminine, and surrealistic tone to his works, negating the brutal realisms of conflict.
WHY
The exhibition offers a unique perspective on the complexity of death, violence, and the allure of weaponry, as well as the evolution of storytelling and its relevance to contemporary times. Unearthing the past, the exhibition asks how tales and stories might continue to inform us about our ever-turbulent world. Showcased at the gallery’s unique space, this is a special showcase that art-lovers should not miss.
