World of the world
WHO
Wataru Yamakami
WHAT
The Japanese artist’s (b.1981) first exhibition in Hong Kong takes place across both Art Central and the gallery, revolving around themes such as ‘proliferation and transformation’, ‘connection of boundaries’, and ‘exploration of connection points’. Since childhood, For the artist, creating artworks lets him connect himself with the reality of the present. Through motifs such as slime, minerals, drifting objects, natural phenomena, festivals and rituals, he manages to seek a ‘truth’ to our world in flux through his oil paintings.
WHY
The artist’s signature ‘World of the world’ series began in 2010, as an evolution of his journey in art-making since his early teen years as a graffiti artist in Tokyo. The collection of works hinges on surrealism while poking at the deeper issues connected to the human experience.
