Whispers of the Soul
WHAT
Co-curated by Arthur de Villepin and Olivier Kaeppelin, this is the first presentation of the Australian-born American painter in Hong Kong. Carroll’s work is characterised by a quiet visual language, subtle colouring, and inconspicuous materials, which reflect his search for belonging and his desire to slow down and observe the world around him. The exhibition also features the works of Giorgio de Chirico, Giorgio Morandi, Cy Twombly, and photographer François Halard, as a tribute to Carroll’s inspirations and influences.
WHY
With the gallery space transformed to summon the sensibility of Mediterranean culture that so absorbed the artist, explore the influences that shaped the artist’s unique artistic output, and engage in a reflective exploration of self and environment. The exhibition provides an opportunity to explore Carroll’s artistic evolution and his creative process that was so deeply influenced by the legacies of other iconic artists.
