WHAT
In this first solo exhibition by the promising Japanese artist, 10 new contemporary ceramic works are showcased. Known for the way he has been shaping the current contemporary ceramic art scene, the gallery has been working with Soda since the beginning of his career. In this exhibition, each of the ceramic works has round spaces that appear – the titular voids. The exhibition title refers to the round spaces that appear in every one of Soda’s works and this empty space is the core for his creative motivation.
WHY
Soda is currently one of the most sought-after young ceramic artists, having been accepted in 2019 for the 8th Kikuchi Biennale and in 2022 for the 5th Triennale of Kogei in Kanazawa. His works are metaphorical – the light streaming through the gaps in the trees; the memories and nostalgia seeping forward in the current presence of mind. The act of creating the round spaces could be interpreted as an artist’s prayer that he could be free from negative things or to free himself.
