Viswanadhan
WHAT
The prominent Indian artist (b.1940) merges tradition and modernity in a manner that is simultaneously personal and universally resonant. His early exposure to idol sculpting and mandalas during childhood profoundly influenced his artistic identity, reflecting his Indian heritage. The exhibition features 15 works created between 2000 and 2010, showcasing his diverse evolutionary phases. The paintings are characterised by shifting chromatic palettes, where the colour red gradually emerges as a dominant force.
WHY
Despite residing and working in France for over 5 decades, the artist maintains strong connections with his Indian roots. Starting from the 1990s, he started utilising colour as a spiritual dialect, using a restrained palette consisting of green, yellow, red, black, and white. These symbolise the hues of the kalamezhuthus, reflecting his meticulous exploration of light, shadow, and transparency.
