Yee I-Lann: Until We Hug Again
WHAT WE KNOW
An internationally acclaimed contemporary artist from Malaysia, Yee established her artistic career through digitally manipulating images from found photographs and historical archives. Her works respond to the modern history of the Southeast Asia Archipelago and its colonial past and post-colonial present; they are social-economic commentaries that seek to highlight issues such as hegemony, hierarchy, and gender inequality.
WHY WE LOVE IT
A critical examiner of image production and material nature, Yee carefully chooses materials and techniques for her works, documenting issues pertinent in today’s societies. The present exhibition showcases her past and recent works, emphasising the significance of textiles, which shed light on the absence of female actors in Southeast Asia’s colonial history, and also collectively represent the intricacy of the region’s multi-ethnic cultural identity and heritage.
