Uninterrupted Space
WHAT
German photographer Candida Höfer, who studied under the influential conceptual artists, Bernd and Hilla Becher, in the 1970s, is best known for her photographs of large-scale, empty interiors. The exhibition brings together an extraordinary selection of photographs of libraries, theatres, museums and palaces, variously located in France, Italy, Mexico, Russia and Spain, all of which illustrate Höfer’s unique ability to capture prominent cultural spaces in sublime silence and the absence of human presence, questioning the ways in which institutions guide viewer perception and perspective.
WHY
Through Höfer artworks, witness scenes of untouched opulence and be amazed by the architectural splendour and majestic timelessness of these historically significant public spaces. With the focus on geometric structures, light and the play of colours, come experience the awe-inspiring photographs that celebrate the cultural richness of each of her ‘subjects’.
