UNBUILT
WHAT WE KNOW
This is the Japanese artist’s first show in Greater China. It includes works from 1987 to 2020, and highlights his continued focus on imaginary architecture and ambient landscapes of indeterminate periods – a blend of the industrial, fantastical, archaic, and futuristic. Beginning with sketches from found images, Nomata’s images are transformed over a period of months, years or even decades, and finally manifest in their present projections.
WHY WE LOVE IT
The presentation reflects the artist’s beliefs and thoughts on an ever-changing world – one that is filled with monoculture, technological pursuits, and overarching human endeavours. In addition, despite the undercurrent of uncertainty and sense of foreboding that his images carry, they are ironically and uniquely zen-like, and perhaps even surreal.
