Two Manifestos
WHAT
The exhibition features the work of two diaspora artists, Siah Armajani and Rasheed Araeen from the 1970s, mirroring their personal experiences in an unfamiliar culture. From photography, painting to sculpture, the two artists present honed, idiosyncratic expressions as non-Europeans, responding to socio-political phenomena deeply rooted in their respective societies – Iran and Pakistan.
WHY
In this expansive space, sculptures by Siah Armajani, a leading figure in conceptual and public art of the1960s, are shown together with photography and mixed media works by Rasheed Araeen, the father of minimalist sculpture in the 1960s. The show offers a fresh perspective on the norms, traditions and changing social, political and cultural realities of the European world, resonating with audiences. We also love how the brightly-coloured artworks blur the lines between art and architecture.
