The Philosophers: ETSU EGAMI x JY
WHO
Etsu Egami, JY
WHAT
Etsu Egami and JY are two young and contemporary artists who have collaborated on multiple works. Etsu Egami is a Japanese artist whose works combine oil painting and traditional Japanese ink painting. In her distinctive style, she explores the relationship between the individual and the surrounding world. JY, on the other hand, is a Hong Kong-based artist who works with sound, installation, and sculpture. His art often incorporates everyday objects and seeks to create immersive experiences that challenge the viewer’s perception of reality. Together, Egami’s and JY’s collaboration results in innovative and thought-provoking works.
WHY
The two artists open up a new space of thoughts, presenting a new space for their artworks to perfectly harmonise. In the midst of the pandemic, Egami became deeply interested in Chinese literature and philosophy. This exhibition presents a series of her symbolic portrait paintings, characterised by bold and placid brushstrokes, as well as vivid and robust colours, capturing the essence of the ‘Hundred Schools of Thought’ through form and composition. In consonance with the portraits, JY’s calligraphic works of the classic idioms are presented. With a connection that spans 2,000 years, linking the ancient and the present, the East and the West, a unique dialogue between oil painting and calligraphy is thus created.
