THE NIGHT
WHO
Maggi Hambling
WHAT
The exhibition marks the first solo exhibition by the controversial British artist (b.1945) in Asia since her museum retrospectives in China 5 years ago. Known for her spirit of rebellion, her work remains a reflection of and draws inspiration from people, places, and her identity as a pioneering artist with a queer perspective. Along with older works, the exhibition includes a new series of paintings that have never been seen before.
Kindly note the gallery’s new venue on Duddell Street.
WHY
Viewing painting as an intimate and physical experience, the artist believes that it must ultimately culminate in a single moment, akin to the profound physicality of love. Influenced by Chinese and Japanese paintings, the works featured throughout the show showcase a technique reminiscent of Chinese calligraphy, a connection rooted in her art student days when she would study Chinese ink drawings at The British Museum.
