The Last Night

September 28, 2021 - November 13, 2021

WHAT WE KNOW

The exhibition is the artist’s first in Hong Kong, and takes its title from the song by Tsai Chin, from the 1984 film adapted from ‘The Last Night of Taipan Chin’ (1971) by Taiwanese author, Pai Hsien-yung. The story follows the retirement of Madame Chin from her glamourous old-Shanghai nightclub, directly contrasted with the rise of new and modern cities of the 21st century. Harnessing these feelings of nostalgia and melancholy, the artist uses large-scale photographs and multi-media light installations to tell sentimental stories of city scenes.

WHY WE LOVE IT

The multi-media artist makes use of photographs as well as light installations in his practice, presenting images and objects that city-dwellers are familiar with, but perhaps never really truly see. Presented as objects of art and taken out of their original context, they force viewers to rethink what these really mean to us, personally as well as collectively.
