The Floating World
WHAT
The exhibition is a part of the Hong Kong Art Gallery Association’s (HKAGA) Summer Programme, with the goal of showcasing local talent and fostering the arts community in Hong Kong. The group show is inspired by Japanese ‘Ukiyo-e’ artworks, and invites viewers to study the fragile and fleeting state of our environment and reality. The featured artists work in different mediums – lithographs, paintings, ceramics, installation, and film – prompting audiences to consider the fragility and impermanence of nature and our world.
Featured artists include Cheng Ting Ting, Vivian Ho, Li Ning, Nicole Wong, and Yan Wai Yin.
WHY
‘Ukiyo-e’ – the painting of the floating world – was a popular medium of Japanese illustration. Topics under the art form included people’s daily routines, portraits of beautiful women, beasts of local mythologies, and fantasies of heroic deeds. The artform was characterised by realistic depiction of the subject matter combined with a bit of extravagance in imagination. The exhibition references both the suffering and grief of the world as well as the indulgence of the newer, urbanite class. It hints at the unstable and ambiguous nature of our world.
