The Cradle Rocks Above an Abyss
WHO
Howie Tsui
WHAT
The solo exhibition showcases a range of the Canadian artist’s works exploring themes of history, mythology, and cultural identity, including large-scale paintings, ink drawings, and a video installation, While the large-scale paintings feature intricate details and bold colours that draw the viewer in, creating a sense of movement and energy, the ink drawings feature detailed and intricate designs that are reminiscent of traditional Chinese ink paintings to invoke depth and dimensionality with line and texture.
WHY
Working in ink brush, sound sculptures, lenticular lightboxes and installations, Tsui constructs tense, fictive environments that undermine venerated art forms and narrative genres, often stemming from the tradition of Chinese martial arts literature. This exhibition showcases his exploration of history, mythology, and cultural identity, and highlights his unique perspective on these complex themes.
