Tanaka and Shiraga: Material and Action

April 2, 2022 - May 14, 2022

WHAT

This focus exhibition showcases the works of two boundary-breaking Japanese artists who belonged to the Gutai Art Association, a pioneering post-war avant-garde group. While the adventurous works of Ryuji Tanaka from the late 1950s incorporate unconventional materials into the traditional Nihonga practice, Kazuo Shiraga’s pursuit of action painting captures the spirit of the Gutai through immediacy and theatricality.

WHY

As two of the biggest names in Gutai, this is a great opportunity to see their works side by side. You’ll be bowled over by Tanaka’s impeccable ability to capture the beauty of nature in his abstract works, and Shiraga’s artistic passion that is so well-expressed in his performance paintings. Revel in the spontaneous strokes, rich colours and raw textures that have come to encapsulate Gutai.
