Subharmonic Tangerine Abyss
WHAT
The late LA-based artist’s first solo exhibition in Greater China showcases works from one of his later significant series, ‘Kandors’. Beyond these works, the exhibition also includes unique videos from 2007, when ‘Kandors’ was first released; these videos document a multitude of things including crystal growth, animation, and a bottle projection. The ‘Kandor’ works started in 1999, with Kelley taking influence from Superman’s home city on the planet Krypton, in response to the idea of an idealised future. The works cover both animated and non-animated works, which evoke a both comic book and idealised feel.
WHY
Known as one of the most ambitious and influential artists of our time, this exhibition showcases Kelley’s genius and brilliance. He drew from both high and low culture in order to challenge contemporary ideas of art in the West. By highlighting banal pieces of reality, he forces the viewers to challenge their perspective and this retrospective honours some of the highlights of his career.
