Strange Strangers
WHAT
Taking place at the non-profit’s new 10th floor annex, the exhibition features works by the New York-based Chinese artist (Cao) and the Hong Kong artist (Chan). While Cao’s works consist of stoneware, glass, and resin, Chan creates sculptures that transform urban debris, ancient artefacts, as well as natural and industrial materials. Though the artists have different approaches to presentation, both of their works exist symbiotically in the space. In addition to these works, 3D renderings containing motifs from the sculptures are on display.
WHY
The artists explore the concept of ‘strange strangers’ – beings that study and challenge the paradox of identity – in order to envision an ecosystem in which one might relate to a collective of beings. Cao works to unravel intimacies and relationships between an array of connected life forms, and Chan experiments with logic and patterns that go past a human-centred worldview. In addition, audiences are treated to an olfactory experience of three scents over the course of the exhibition period, sponsored by Aēsop. The scent will be changed every two weeks, creating three distinct viewing experiences.
