Seurat Studies: Monitors and Printers

November 27, 2021 - December 31, 2021

WHAT

This is Xue Feng’s first solo in the gallery’s Hong Kong space. Curated by Cui Cancan, the show features 20 works from 2012 to the present day, all exploring modern genres of impressionism and abstraction. Xue Feng’s style of painting stems from Georges Seurat’s and Pointillism’s scientific, rational attitude towards colour separation, much like the mechanics of monitors and printers. The artist consciously minimises the narrative element by repeatedly depicting the same subjects and forms, making the themes as monotonous as possible and the spaces as simple as possible.

WHY

Xue has become more ambitious with the use of abstraction – filling his canvases with gestural strokes and spots, both vertically and horizontally across the entire composition; he sometimes even practises the Richter-style of rubbing and scraping paint. The artist endeavours to ultimately explore how subject matters could always be separated into categories of colour, light, and shadow.
