Sean Scully: Carbon and Air

May 24 - July 27
Sean Scully

WHAT
The renowned Irish-born American artist (b.1945) works have significantly shaped contemporary abstraction. The exhibition spans rare figurative works and highlights the evolution of some of the artist’s best-known abstract series. Fusing European painting traditions with the distinct character of American abstraction, his pieces combine painterly drama with visual delicacy. Often structured around stripes or layered blocks of colour arranged on horizontal and vertical axes, the layers attain a fine balance between calm reflection and intrinsic vitality.

WHY
The artist’s practice, deeply rooted in both minimalism and emotional abstraction, captures acutely experienced impressions of the world. This exhibition invites viewers to explore the nuanced interplay of light and dark, and the subtle introduction of colour. Admire how the artist is able to convey light through meticulous shading, creating ‘colour without colour’, and how the intimacy of his drawing strips familiar motifs to their purest form.
