Public Art (Julian Opie) at Pacific Place
WHAT
A prominent sculptor and digital artist of the New British Sculpture movement, Julian Opie’s iconic depictions of human figures are no stranger to us. Although he reduces his subjects to essential lines and flat colour planes, he nonetheless succeeds in bringing movement and dynamics to his 2D installations. Over time, Opie has also expanded his practice to cover art and apparel designs, such as his collaboration with Uniqlo.
‘Running 3.’’s 13 figures can be found along the walkway connecting Island Shangri-La and Conrad Hotels. ‘Parade.’s 62 characters can be found through the pedestrian link between Pacific Place Mall and the Star Street precinct.
WHY
These 2 expansive installations are proof that art is everywhere, whether you’re in a rush to get to a business meeting or just strolling around leisurely at Pacific Place. Opie’s figures are also a reminder that art and creativity not only surround us, but are part of our daily lives – a testament to contemporary art being visible and easily accessible to the Hong Kong public.
