Private Vanitas
WHO
Justin Lim
WHAT
The Malaysian artist’s newest presentation is a collection of modern and colourful still life and interior scenes, giving a contemporary twist to the concept of old master vanitas paintings that were popularised in the 17th century. Reflecting on a post-pandemic world – referencing psychological themes of solitude, melancholy and isolation – creating the collection was a cathartic experience that allowed him to process a shared experience post-lockdown and to deal with the surreality of the times.
WHY
Back in the 17th century, vanitas artists devoted their craft to portraying a message that pleasures of the world are impermanent and fleeting, using symbolism such as wilting flowers, skulls, musical instruments and food to convey this theme. In post-pandemic times of confusion amidst technological advancements, the artist wanted to create, document and engage with a new reality, where personal space is temporary, and where multiple realities exist.
