Pause, Arise

January 7, 2023 - February 4, 2023

WHAT
This is the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery as well as in Hong Kong, and it features a selection of paintings that evolve from figuration to abstraction. Zhong’s focus was on creating a poetic display of historical records and beliefs, showcasing the process of how she unfolds her perceptions and impressions. Her figurative works re-enact history and re-examine the definition of historical documentation and as figures are softened or distorted, her analyses through these works inspire a nostalgic feeling. Then in her abstract works, she takes the emotions the figurations evoke and looks inward, analysing them further in these paintings.

WHY
The juxtaposition of Zhong’s figurations and abstractions flows like an articulate essay. With a keen eye for observation and acute sense of perception, she asks her audience to reassess their impressions of the world as well as how they look back at history. While doing so, she shows them a series of nostalgic images that evoke a series of emotions. From there, she presents the abstractions – almost physical forms of the emotions the viewers are feeling.
