Out of the Time
WHAT
The Berlin-based artist’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong explores the theme of weaknesses of human nature and existence, based on the artist’s own personal experiences. In this exhibition, she depicts chaotic images of survivors in ruins with their eyes, hearts, or other body parts hollowed out or mutilated. The imageries allude to the decay and withering of the modern spiritual and world.
WHY
Zhang’s practice is influenced by her experiences growing up in Shenzhen in the 90s, when the city experienced rapid economic development and social change. She was forcefully kept inside the house out of her parents’ fear of her abduction. As a result, she experienced hunger and loneliness whenever her parents were away, creating a combination of insecurities that pushed her towards painting as a method of comfort. From this self-therapy comes a number of hauntingly beautiful paintings where viewers can enjoy the product of Zhang’s insecurities and fears.
