One Hill, One Valley

July 27, 2023 - August 29, 2023

WHAT
The Chinese artist moves from monumental sculptures to landscape paintings, with over 20 pieces from his latest series, where he re-enlivens and re-interprets the landscape painting genre. Making sure to specify that his works are ‘landscape’ paintings and not those of mere ‘scenery’, the artist wants to stress the presence of elements of personal experiences as well as spirituality, which are inherent in landscape paintings.

WHY
After resigning from his position as President of the China Academy of Art, the artist spent two years painting the countryside of Jiangnan, finally finding the time to fully experience the landscape. To the artist, the mountains ‘Zhushan,’ ‘Taishan,’ ‘Quanshan,’ and ‘Yashan’ are not merely mountains in Jiangnan, but the spiritual peak that is upheld by Chinese painters and scholars. Viewers will be awed to see how the artist makes landscapes come to life with his own personal experiences in the area.
