Old and New
WHAT
Curated within the unique architectural space of the museum, this exhibition showcases over 60 iconic works spanning the 35-year artistic career of Zeng Fanzhi, one of the most recognizable figures in Chinese contemporary art. Divided into four sections – ‘The Early Years’, ‘Different Paths’, ‘Painting as Contemplation’, and ‘Monumentals – the exhibition presents Zeng’s early works, such as the renowned ‘Mask; series from the 1990s, as well as the ‘Abstract Landscape’ series from the 2000s. Notably, the exhibition features the global premiere of the artist’s new series, ‘Sparkling Paintings’, which he has been working on since 2019.
WHY
While viewers may be familiar with Zeng’s captivating ‘Mask’ works, characterised by large vacant eyes and thick, clumsy hands, this exhibition offers much more. It provides an immersive exploration of his evolving artistic journey and his bold experimentation with the fusion of Eastern and Western artistic traditions. The artist reflects his continuous exploration of subject matter, composition, brushstrokes, and colour composition in visually and historically complex paintings, leaving viewers inspired and engaged.
