Oh Se-Yeol
WHO
Oh Se-Yeol
WHAT
Known as a ‘master painter’, the Korean artist (b.1945) has embarked on a creative journey for over 5 decades. His first solo exhibition at the gallery features works that cover the monochromatic backgrounds with repetitive numbers, sometimes interrupted by the presence of everyday objects. Resembling a childhood diary or chalkboard doodles, his works address the unconscious as well as scattered latent childhood memories.
WHY
The artist often incorporates youthful elements such as scribbles of numerical digits and collages of everyday objects into his paintings, expressing childlike innocence and purity. Despite living through the Korean War and witnessing the country’s rapid social development, his works focus on personal memory rather than collective ones, inspiring audiences to interpret his works through their own imaginations and emotions. His works take viewers into a poetic universe.
