WHAT
The American artist’s (b. 1986) second solo exhibition at the gallery premiers his renowned text works alongside a new series of shorthand writings. Focusing his practice on the relationship between semiotics and language to confront social and political topics such as race, power, communication, and labour, the artist creates drawings using graphite, pencil and paper; he traces and develops abstract narratives and reflections on the notion of the gestural. Through his discerning use of language, he draws inspiration from a diverse sources, ranging from the lexicon of advertising and consumer culture to more abstract, conceptual philosophical writings.
WHY
Characterised by the artist’s poetic approach, the exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the presence and role of language in our contemporary world and to uncover the hidden beauty and myriad meaning of the words. With his text works paired together with his shorthand writings for the first time, a new sense of rhythmic vitality infuses the exhibition.
