New Moroism
WHAT
This exhibition features the works of an emerging generation of artists whose roots are in Asia – Michael Ho, Chris Huen Sin Kan, Timothy Lai, and Su Yu-Xin. The title of this exhibition was inspired by the Japanese morotai style, with ‘moro’ meaning vague or indistinct. This idea is used to explore the personal narratives of each of the artists, who hope to depict the hazy memories of their past to the current experiences of their lives; they seek to expand the parameters and ideation of figuration in painting characterised by certain hazy conditions or blurred visions.
WHY
The artists all originate from different backgrounds: Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Malaysia, and Taiwan. Each of them works in a distinct style: Ho pushes paint back from the canvas and superimposes images on the front. Huen focuses on creating a constellation of brush marks imbued with the hallmarks of traditional Chinese ink painting. Lai explores the positions of figures and Su focuses on the ‘boneless’ method of Chinese brush painting.
