Natural Selection
WHAT
For several decades, Nina Katchadourian has been considering the contradictory implications of the word ‘natural’ and explored the relationships between human and non-human animals, sometimes intervening in ways she terms ‘uninvited collaborations with nature’. Through her many projects, her explorations of this kind are often the result of spontaneous play and experimentation. This is her first solo exhibition at Pace in Hong Kong, and the presentation is complemented by an online exhibition of works from the artist’s new Fake Plants series.
WHY
Katchadourian’s practice reflect a humorous, curious approach to the world and her unique perspective on biology. The multi-media exhibition includes the new ‘Fake Plants’ series (2021), where during the pandemic she started making artificial plants at home using materials such as discarded cardboard boxes, disposable medical masks, sewing pins, toothpicks, leftover craft supplies, and even ping pong balls. The artist’s longstanding methodology of working with mundane materials close at hand intersects with her intense interest in what is considered natural. Her creations bring viewers closer to the overlooked, familiar matter that constitutes domestic lives.
