Mythologies: Surrealism & Beyond
WHAT
Founded in 1924 by French poet, André Breton, the Surrealism movement followed the belief that mythologies brought human societies together by sharing common stories of their origins and associated rites. Inspired by Sigmund Freud’s theories on the unconscious, most of us are fascinated by and familiar with the Surrealist art movement and its associations with dreams, fantasies and the subconscious.
WHY
As a modern art movement of the 20th century, the Surrealist art movement, with its irrational, bizarre, and quirky juxtapositions of images, has never really been showcased in Hong Kong until now. As part of the French May, over 100 diverse art pieces and archival material are presented from the Centre Pompidou – truly a treat for local audiences! Alongside works by famous European surrealist artists, the museum also invited Hong Kong artists to respond to the exhibition – a move to engage local audiences to relate to Surrealism from a unique Hong Kong perspective!
