Moss Wonders
WHO
Chan Ting
WHAT
In this solo exhibition that is the result of a 3-month residency, the Hong Kong artist (b.1993) showcases their mixed media, image, sound, and installation works that explore the relationships among people, cities, and nature. The artist has collected a range of eclectic objects from Quarry Bay, the neighbourhood of Para Site, including 50-year-old wooden furniture, a pair of ceramic chicken feet, and a saucer from a former teahouse. Accompanied by images and sounds, the exhibition space is transformed into an improvised ‘room of wonders’ filled with shared memories. They draw inspiration from the life cycle of moss, carpeting the exhibition space with slabs and installations in an attempt to recast the ‘white cube’.
WHY
Audiences are encouraged to wander around, open a cupboard, peer inside, and delve into the hidden stories that lie beneath. The exhibition is a poetic dialogue between image and sound, and Chan’s tactile sensibility is evident in the reconfiguration of the form and texture of ready-made materials. Their work invites the audience to embrace a life akin to moss, to find a footing and generate multiple points of connections against the existing order.
