WHAT
The Japanese artist’s first exhibition in Hong Kong is a new series of intertextually-linked photographs and paintings, which explores the changing nature of family relationships, especially the complexities of motherhood and daughterhood, while questioning the meaning of face-to-face meeting in contemporary society. The title implies that parents expect their children to mimic their behaviour, like a reflection in the mirror. The artist’s work is based on interviews with women of her generation, and she derives titles and motifs from striking phrases in these conversations.

WHY
The artworks resemble a collection of short stories, each piece containing a different narrative about reuniting with family after a long time apart. From a feminine perspective, the artworks were inspired from interviewing a number of women who reunited with their families for the first time after living apart for a while. The thought-provoking exhibition inevitably raises questions about family values, parental aspirations, but more importantly expectations of acceptable (feminine) behaviour.
