MICHELE CHU: YOU, TRICKLING
WHO
Michele Chu
WHAT
The Hong Kong-born artist (b. 1994) has gained recognition for her thought-provoking works that explore the themes of intimacy and the body, and she further mines rituals of intimacy and vulnerability in her debut solo exhibition. With a cross-disciplinary approach that combines painting, installation, and sound, Chu’s multi-media presentation aims to create immersive experiences that engage the viewer’s senses and emotions.
WHY
The presentation is a passageway of meditative exploration for audiences, as it is both a poignant observation and a guide to ourselves, and is filled with artworks that explore concepts of loss, trauma, memory, and the body. At the entrance, a wall of fabric separates the exterior world from the inner world. Then, moving further into the exhibition, visitors encounter rituals that are reminiscent of a bathhouse about cleansing, soothing, and unsettling. Finally, a space is designed to evoke memories of birth, menstruation, excretion, and death, among the art pieces are body parts.
