Men from the Sixties
WHAT
This newest exhibition of the late acclaimed American artist (1900-1984)’s works is the first in the Greater China region and contains works that will also be the subject of a concurrent major retrospective exhibition in Paris and London. Regarded as one of the foremost artists of the twentieth century, the show is a presentation of her paintings of men from the 1960s – major cultural figures including well-known artists, critics, and authors as well as activists and politicians. It was a turning point in her artistic career as her style evolved into the looser, more open compositions she would come to be known for.
WHY
While Neel had been steadily painting and exhibiting her work since the late 1920s, it was during the 1960s that she began to gain critical acclaim and increasingly interact with major cultural figures. A decisive decade for her artistic development, her style shifted to become increasingly imbued with more open energy. As part of a large travelling retrospective of her work, this exhibition showcases some of the artist’s best works and highlights the peak of her artistic process – certainly a must-see for those who are interested in contemporary American art.
